My Best Yukon Day, Part II: Carcross and the lake

The Great Caribou Hike of 2013 brought us into Carcross for a coffee reward at its end. Sara and Hannah grew up in Whitehorse, and Hannah now lives on the lower mainland now—so heading into Carcross became “you won’t believe how much it’s changed!” and therefore lots of exploring ensued…

And, when you have Yukon blood in you, and it’s about 18 degrees, sunny, and you’re all a-dew, post-hike, things just take a downward spiral from “exploring”, to become, “hey guys, let’s go swimming!!”

In a glacial lake.

This is my favourite photographic essay here:

“Yeah, OK. Swimming. Let’s do it!” 2013-07-21 17.55.28

“I’m going in, you guys!” 2013-07-21 17.55.31

“Wait. Am I going in?!” 2013-07-21 17.55.41Spoiler alert: she did. Sort of. Eventually…2013-07-21 17.55.02I, however, did not. Do you see how the water is brown *and* blue? The blue is the glacier water, and it’s *freezing*. And that’s all I needed to know. 2013-07-21 17.56.28Swimming seemed secondary. I was on a lake! With waves! And a sand beach! in the Yukon?!?  2013-07-21 18.03.09 2013-07-21 18.06.06Yup. Who needs Hawaii?

  1. Sounds like you had a lot of fun! 😀 Me too, when I saw those funny warning sings at the bridge (do not enter but use at own risk). I hope for a more inviting retirement home though, one day … 😀
